Ancient church of Fuzhou removed

Oct 22, 2008
Fanchuanpu Catholic Church, in Fuzhou, the capital of east China's Fujian province, stands as a witness to local history and changing times. However, a City development plan has required that the old building be removed to a new location.

The church was built in 1864 during the Qing Dynasty's Tongzhi Period. The two-story brick and wood, Gothic structure was renovated in 1932. It's the largest Catholic church in the province and has been designated as a provincial cultural relic.

The reconstruction of Riverside Boulevard, necessitated the removal of the church. Last year, local government authorities and experts began drafting a plan for relocating the aged structure. The move began August 30 of this year. It took over one month for the church to be re-moved on a revolving platform 80 meters to the east.

On October 9, the building was turned 90 degrees then moved another 30 meters south. The work marks the first time an ancient building has been reoriented and relocated in China.
