BENTONVILLE - The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is still more than a year away from opening its doors, but that won't keep it from hosting a widely recognized art critic on Sunday.
At 2 p. m., Dr. Arthur Danto, one of the most widely recognized American art critics and longtime Columbia University professor of philosophy, will explore the question "What Is Art ? "with area residents in a lecture at the Old High Middle School Auditorium, 406 N. W. Second St.
Danto's first visit to northwest Arkansas will be part of Crystal Bridges'new lecture series," Speaking of …," which will bring renowned thinkers and explorers in the world of art, design and nature to the region to share viewpoints and perspectives on the state of culture - past, present and future.
Danto is an art critic for The Nation, editor of the Journal of Philosophy, a contributing editor to various respected art publications and the author of several books of criticism.
Following his lecture, Danto will appear at Crystal Bridges at the Massey, 125 W. Central Ave., for a book signing and reception.
"What I'm going to try to do is - have you really thought through the question of contemporary art ? "Danto asked. "We're dealing with a world where works of art - you can't often tell what they are. Are they beautiful or not ? What I have to do is motivate that."
