Mao Dun Awards handed out to top authors

The prestigious Mao Dun Literature Awards were presented over the weekend. Four contemporary works were given top honors at the ceremony, in east Chinas' Zhejiang Province.
The Qinqiang Opera is the 12th full-length novel by Jia Pingwa. The novelist is known for realistic, matter-of-fact narrative that communicates the depths of human feelings. This story is set in a rural area of northwest China's Shaanxi province, where the author was brought up.
Calculations is a novel about the lives of some gifted individuals. The setting is a counter intelligence agency, where military mathematicians set about cracking enemy codes. Author Mai Jia has been an encryption expert himself. The novel was a best seller. The television adaptation enjoys a large audience.
The Lake and Mountain by Zhou Daxin and Chi Zijian's Right Bank of the River round out the list of honoured works. Both follow the lives of ordinary, contemporary people, facing immense social change in China.
Chen Jiangong, vice-chairman of Mao Dun Awards Jury, said, "Compared with the previous six presentations, the 7th Mao Dun Awards put greater emphasis on contemporary social reality in China. These authors display more interest in the emerging social elements."
The Mao Dun Literature Awards are named in honour of one of China's greatest modern authors. Mao Dun is the pen-name of writer Shen Yanbing. The awards are among China's most prestigious literary honours.
